1. 普通话（Standard Mandarin/Putonghua）是现代标准汉语的另一个称呼，以北京语音为标准音，以北方官话为基础方言，以典范的现代白话文著作为语法规范的通用语。汉语不等同于普通话，推广普通话并不是要人为地消灭方言，主要是为了消除方言隔阂，以利社会交际，与人民使用传承方言并不矛盾。 1909年清政府将北平语音命名为国语。民国时多次制定标准，1918年北洋政府公布了第一套国家认可的国音注音字母。1932年经国民政府教育部颁布《国音常用字汇》后，确定国语标准。普通话以北京语音为标准音，而不是以滦平语音为标准音。制定标准后于1955年向全国推广。2000年，《中华人民共和国国家通用语言文字法》确立了普通话和规范汉字作为国家通用语言文字的法律地位。 2022年6月，教育部召开“教育这十年”“1+1”系列第六场新闻发布会，介绍党的十八大以来语言文字事业改革发展成就，十年来，全国普通话普及率从70%提高到80.72%。
