a city on the south coast of the island of Honshu, western Japan, capital of Chugoku region; pop. 1,144,572 (2007). It was the target of the first atom bomb, which was dropped by the United States on 6 August 1945 and resulted in the deaths of about one third of the city's population of 300,000. Together with a second attack, on Nagasaki three days later, this led to Japan's surrender and the end of the Second World War.
