"Life seems to exploit every possible chemical pathway to obtain energy and make carbon-carbon bonds," says Hazen.

As Dr Hazen pointed out, carbon is the fourth-most-abundant element in the universe, after hydrogen, helium and oxygen.

And according to Hazen, the researchers have found no sign of the plume in the last three weeks, suggesting its breakdown.
