1. 弯曲应力（bending stress）系指法向应力的变化，分量沿厚度上的变化可以是线性的，也可是非线性的。其最大值发生在壁厚的表面处，设计时一般取最大值进行强度校核。壁厚的表面达到屈服后，仍能继续提高承载能力，但表面应力不再增加，屈服层由表面向中间扩展。所以在压力容器中，弯曲应力的危害性要小于相同数值的薄膜应力（应力沿壁厚均布）。
